Intergenerational Educational Mobility and Social Origin in Morocco: Insights from the 2014 ENCDM

Abstract

This paper analyzes the intergenerational evolution of educational attainment in Morocco using data from the 2013–2014 National Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey (ENCDM 2014). The study focuses on sons and daughters aged 25 to 65 and adopts a descriptive approach based on five-year birth cohorts and the matching of individuals with the household head. The results show a continuous rise in educational attainment across generations, reflecting a process of educational expansion. However, this dynamic is accompanied by a plateau in access to higher education. Despite an increase in upward educational mobility, social origin remains a central determinant of educational trajectories. The educational level and socio-professional category of the household head strongly condition access to higher-level qualifications. Moreover, the educational catch-up of women mainly benefits urban areas, while territorial inequalities persist.
